E-Bike Controllers: General Overview

E-bike controllers manage how electrical energy flows to prevent component burnout and deliver smooth power.

Key Functions

  • Power Regulation: Converts DC power from the battery into 3-phase AC power required by brushless motors.

  • Speed & Torque Management: Interprets throttle or pedal-assist sensor inputs to set current output.

  • System Protection: Includes built-in safety features such as Over-Voltage Protection (OVP), Under-Voltage Protection (UVP), Over-Current Protection (OCP), and Over-Temperature Protection (OTP).

  • Peripheral Integration: Controls brake cut-off switches, regenerative braking, speedometer displays, and electronic gear selection.

Common Types

  1. Square Wave (Block) Controllers: Budget-friendly and simple, but noisy and prone to motor vibration at low RPMs.

  2. Sine Wave (FOC) Controllers: Advanced vector control that runs quietly, reduces thermal wear, and provides smooth, linear acceleration.

Fardriver (Nanjing Fardriver Technology) produces Field-Oriented Control (FOC) sine wave controllers. They are designed for high-power hub motors and mid-drive motors, such as those from QS Motor, Yuma Motor, and Siaecosys.
